When it comes to achieving clear, youthful skin, Differin Gel (adapalene) and over-the-counter retinol are two of the most popular treatment due to being extensively studied for years and supported by the FDA. While both belong to the retinoid family, they target different concerns and work differently in your skincare routine. In this blog post, we’ll break down the pros and cons of each, their ideal use cases, side effects, my experience using both and more.
💡 What is Differin Gel?
- Active ingredient: Adapalene 0.1% or 0.3% (perscription)
- Originally prescription-only, now OTC in 0.1% available at most pharmacies (U.S)
- FDA-approved for acne treatment
- Non-irritating compared to traditional tretinoin
Differin Gel is a form of synthetic retinoid called adapalene, designed primarily to target acne. It works by regulating skin cell turnover, preventing clogged pores, and reducing inflammation. Unlike traditional retinoids, Differin is stable in sunlight and can be used in the morning if necessary, though nighttime use is preferred. It is a preferred alternative for people who can not tolerate tretinoin. Click here for more in-depth information on Differin Gel!

🌿 What is Retinol?
- Over-the-counter (OTC) vitamin A derivative
- Gentler than prescription retinoids
- Primarily used for anti-aging
- Improves fine lines, skin texture, and tone
Retinol must convert through multiple steps in the skin (retinol → retinaldehyde → retinoic acid) before becoming active.

This makes it slower acting and gentler, but also less potent than adapalene. It’s ideal for first-time retinoid users and those focusing on collagen production and skin aging. Click here for more information on Retinol.
🔬 When to Use Differin vs. Retinol
Differin Gel
- Struggling with active acne, clogged pores, or blackheads.
- Teens to late 20s (or as needed for acne)
Retinol
- Reduce fine lines, improve skin elasticity, or fade hyperpigmentation
- Mid 20s to 30s+ for preventative and corrective aging benefits
You can start with retinol in your mid-20s as a preventative anti-aging measure. If acne is a primary concern regardless of age, Differin will give faster results and is more targeted for breakouts.
⏳ How Long Until You See Results?
- Differin: 8–12 weeks for visible improvement in acne
- Retinol: 12–24 weeks for anti-aging results like smoother texture and fine line reduction
Both products require patience. You may experience an initial “purge” in the first few weeks. Consistency is key — neither is a quick fix, but long-term use leads to substantial results.
⚠️ Side Effects to Watch Out For
- Dryness and peeling
- Increased sun sensitivity
- Initial purging phase
- Irritation if overused or layered incorrectly
Both Differin and retinol can irritate your skin at first. Use a “buffering” technique (apply moisturizer first) to reduce sensitivity, and always pair with SPF during the day.
🛒 Where to Buy
- Differin Gel: Available OTC at drugstores, Amazon, and Target
- Retinol: Available from multiple brands like The Ordinary, CeraVe, Paula’s Choice, and Neutrogena
Be sure to buy from a reputable retailer. Differin comes in 0.1% (OTC) and 0.3% (prescription strength). OTC retinols range in potency from 0.1% to 1% — start low if you’re new to retinoids. There are also many options for retinols so if one forumla doesn’t work for you, can try another brands.
🧴 Application Tips
- Apply at night on completely dry skin
- Use a pea-sized amount
- Follow with a hydrating moisturizer
- Start 2–3 nights a week and gradually increase
The best tip I have found with Differin or Retinol is to make sure your skin is hydrated and using no other actives while on either treatment.
💬 My Experience with Differin and Retinol
At the beginning of 2025, my whole face broke out in closed comedones, acne, inflammation, and dryness/peeling. I started to use my retinol to help clear my closed comedones which it did at a very slow pace but upon learning Differin Gel is made specifically made for treating acne, I switched to that 3 weeks ago.
1st week: intense peeling and flaky skin that subsided quickly. Probably because I had been using retinol for a while at that point so my skin could tolerate adapalene pretty well.
2nd week: the closed comedones on my face all started to come out in the form of acne – small or cystic size with lots of inflammation.
3rd week: most of the closed comedones on my face have cleared with a few pimples still popping up but the frequency in which has lowered.
At 3 weeks in, I do feel Differin gel is making a quicker work on the pimples and closed comedones I have. Although, dealing with the purge does put a strain on my overall self confidence, I know which patience and time it will subside. To anyone else looking for a long term solution to acne, I would recommend using Differin Gel.
Hopefully once all the acne has gone down, I would like to switch to tretinon for anti-aging purposes.
📌 Final Thoughts
- Differin Gel is your best bet for acne-prone skin.
- Retinol is ideal for aging concerns and skin tone improvement.
- Both can be part of a long-term skincare routine — just not layered on the same night for beginners.
Whether you’re team Differin or team Retinol, consistency and proper use will yield glowing results!
