If you’re dealing with congestion, blackheads, or dull skin, The Ordinary’s Salicylic Acid 2% Masque might just be what you need. Having used this product for over 5 years, here’s the full scoop — ingredients, performance, pros and cons, and whether it’s worth a spot in your skincare routine.

🧪 What Is It?

This product is a wash-off clay-based face mask that combines 2% salicylic acid (BHA) with charcoal and Amazonian clays. It’s designed to:

  • Target textural irregularities
  • Help clear up congested pores
  • Improve skin clarity without excessive irritation

It’s especially suitable for oily, blemish-prone, or combination skin types. That being said, I have dry to normal skin and this worked amazing for me as well.

🔍 Key Ingredients Breakdown

  • Salicylic Acid (2%): A beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that deeply exfoliates inside the pores to clear sebum buildup and reduce breakouts.
  • Charcoal: Known for its detoxifying properties, it helps absorb excess oil and impurities from the skin.
  • Amazonian Clays (Kaolin & Montmorillonite): These natural clays gently draw out impurities and reduce shine without over-drying.

One of my favorite ingredients to incorporate into my skin care routine as someone with sensitive skin is Salicylic Acid. Although if used to frequently, it can cause excessive dryness and an inflamed barrier. When used in moderation though, it is a rock star of an ingredient.

The Ordinary Salicylic Acid 2% Masque, importantly, is free of alcohol, silicones, oil, and fragrance, making it suitable for sensitive skin (though a patch test is still recommended).

🧖‍♀️ How to Use It

  • Apply a thin, even layer to clean, dry skin
  • Leave on for no more than 10 minutes
  • Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water
  • Use 1–2 times a week, max

Pro tip: Avoid using it on the same day as other strong exfoliants or retinoids.

💬 My Experience

I have dry to normal skin with occasional breakouts and stubborn blackheads on my nose and chin. I noticed:

  • Skin felt smoother and less oily
  • Pores looked slightly refined
  • A couple of small spots dried out overnight

After use for years (twice weekly):

  • My T-zone looked less congested
  • Breakouts were reduced in frequency
  • Skin felt balanced, not tight or dry

However, it’s not a miracle product. Results build slowly, and those with very dry or sensitive skin might experience tightness if overused.

🏁 Final Verdict

If your skin is prone to oiliness, clogged pores, or breakouts — The Ordinary’s Salicylic Acid 2% Masque is a smart addition to your weekly routine. It’s affordable, effective, and straightforward. One of my favorite products to use.
